Nordson Corporation Aids Preservation of Atlanta-Area Forests Through Purchase of Carbon Offsets from Georgia-Alabama Land Trust

Permanent Forest Conservation within GALT’s Namesake Preserve in Atlanta, Georgia Supported by Sale of ICROA-Endorsed Carbon+ Credits.

Nordson Corporation and Georgia-Alabama Land Trust (GALT) announce Nordson’s purchase of carbon offsets generated by the preservation of the previously at-risk Anneewakee Forest Preserve in Douglas County, Georgia.

This 185-acre oak-hickory Anneewakee Forest Preserve is situated in the densely populated and growing Atlanta metropolitan area. The 85-year-old forest was zoned residential in a suburban area experiencing rapid residential growth. GALT’s protection of this forest – enabled in part by the sale of carbon offsets – ensures green spaces for residents and wildlife in Douglas County.

“Urban growth is projected to add close to 100 million acres of urban land to the United States by 2060,” said Hal Robinson, GALT’s director of legal affairs and compliance. “Preserving at-risk parcels near cities delivers critical ecological and social impacts to metro areas. GALT was able to preserve this at-risk, mature hardwood forest in metropolitan Atlanta through the generation and sale of high-quality, ICROA-endorsed carbon offsets. We greatly appreciate Nordson’s commitment to carbon offsetting and choosing GALT’s Anneewakee Preserve for its offsets, thereby also supporting local preservation of at-risk conservation land.”

The purchase, combined with previous purchases by Nordson, generated significant funding that directly supported GALT’s preservation of the Anneewakee Forest Preserve. Nordson intends to retire the offsets immediately as part of its comprehensive efforts to reduce its carbon emissions and offset emissions that cannot be reduced.

“Nordson’s long-standing operations in the greater Atlanta region are an important piece of our global operating footprint, and several hundred Nordson employees live and work in the area. Investing in environmental conservation through a nonprofit, accredited land trust like GALT protects the region’s land, water, air and, biodiversity from development threats that would

take generations to restore,” said Zach Robock, senior corporate counsel, who leads Nordson’s strategic sustainability efforts. “We invest in nature-based carbon offsets to supplement Nordson’s parallel climate action strategies, such as energy efficiency projects, onsite clean energy generation, and clean energy procurement from offsite sources. We selected the Anneewakee Forest Preserve due to its biodiversity value, accessibility via walking trails, imminent threat of development, and function as a tributary to Atlanta’s public drinking water system. We hope our investment can help catalyze additional funding for land conservation.”

The ex-post credits were issued by City Forest Credits (CFC) under its Preservation Protocol, which is endorsed by the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA), a leading global standard for carbon offset credit issuance.
